Anyone on the street bike should avoid this road at all costs. It is an awful road that hasn't seen any maintenance in what looks like decades. Even all a dual sport, this might not be all that pleasant. Well it has some decent views in a few places, and only a few places, similar views fuse can be found all up and down the coast
Warning! This is not a road to be taken lightly at the end of a long day. There are potholes everywhere, gravel sections, chunks of road missing, wooden bridges that support one vehicle at a time, and dangerous u-turns on hillsides. Make sure you have good weather, a full tank, and friends for safety. Once you're in there's no easy way back. I got caught half way through by myself in the wind and rain at the end of a long day and things got scary fast. Beautiful sights as long as you're prepared. Also, be careful of booking a hotel in Eureka - it's an area plagued by theft and local riders warned me the homeless will steal the luggage right off your bike. Tank bags, even frame sliders. I stayed in Arcata which is slightly safer, but still lots of homelessness and theft. Bring everything you can into your room with you.
This is an excellent all day ride with several optional routes to extend or shorten the ride. There are some sections that have more traffic than others, however most of this run is carless. A lot of the road has no line down down the middle, so anything goes, but be careful. Some rich kids that grew up around here believe they own the road... and they drive pretty large diesel pick-ups. Once you get way out toward the coast, the traffic virtually disappears and you´re all along. Try to make it to the Yellow Rose in Petrolia for lunch. Redway/Garberville has pretty good food: The Lost French Man in Redway; Humboldt Bar & Grill in Garberville or Cecil´s in Garberville for dinner. You won´t be disappointed and this will be one of your life´s most memorable days. Doing the entire loop and winding up where you started is also a pretty fun option.
