I think it will be bit better to take it opposite way, because of the road from Bacai to Vartop. But surface is generally very bad. I even preferred sometimes to stay in pegs. Scenery is nice, but nothing spectacular. When I stopped somewhere I just heard thunderstorm constantly(without rain), which was really nice experience mostly in narrow valleys. One start to imagine, how people created scary stories and gods in the past.
stegoAnother excellent scenic road, surface is in places concrete slabs that are patched together so not the best (not good for stiffly sprung bikes really) but it is changeable and is in places, in excellent condition. There are many nice corners. This is quite a long road (about 2 hours travelling at a reasonable pace), in general the environment is very nice and interesting to enjoy on the move or to stop. There are long sections by picturesque river. There are some famous Ice caves to visit in Sarda de Sus (not open on Sunday I found out!). After Sarda de Sus it becomes more hilly and there is a really excellent downhill section of tighter mountain style curves at Baita-Plai before becoming more built up and joining the DN76
